Choosing the right switch-mode supply

Getting the SMPS architecture right early saves costly re-spins and compliance delays. A few decisions shape every design:

Form factor External desktop/wall adapter for portable gear; enclosed for industrial; open-frame to embed; on-board SMPS where the converter lives on your PCB.
Topology Flyback for low-to-mid power; forward / LLC resonant for higher power and efficiency; add PFC above ~75 W.
Efficiency Specify DoE Level VI / CoC Tier 2 and no-load power for external units — it drives topology, magnetics and thermal design.
Safety class IEC/UL 62368-1 for ITE/AV, 60601 for medical; creepage, clearance and isolation built to class.
